What can I do to help animals?
There are lots of things which each one of us can do to reduce the cruelty which animals suffer. In order of importance:
- Stop eating them. Going vegetarian and ideally vegan vastly reduces the number of animals which die. Farmers breed animals dependent on demand, if we reduce the demand then fewer animals are born and fewer are slaughtered. Don’t know where to start? Look at our pages on veganism and our cruelty free fayres.
- Don’t buy products tested on animals. Make sure that your money supports companies which use non-animal safety tests. To find out which are which get a copy of the naturewatch guide from www.naturewatch.org
- Don’t support zoos, circuses with animals, horse or dog races, hunting, shooting or fishing. By simply not attending you are not paying for animals to be treated badly. If you hunt, fish or shoot you are directly injuring and killing innocent creatures. Go for cruelty free alternatives such as going to circuses with only human performers, playing, betting on or watching human athletes and getting involved in the natural environment in a positive way, such as woodland walks, tree-planting or bird watching.
- Avoid all products made from animals, such as leather, wool, fur, silk, bone and animal hair.
- If you have space in your life for an animal, get one from a reputable sanctuary. Don’t allow your animals to breed; there are plenty of animals needing a loving home.
- Let your voice be heard. Write to shops selling fur, foie gras or other products which involve cruelty. Let Merseyside Animal Rights group know if you see places selling them items. You could also lobby your MP and make sure they sign Early Day Motions which protect animals.
- Join our group, come to a meeting and see what we are up to. We protest against businesses which profit from animal abuse in the area, attend national demonstrations and organize transport to these; demonstrate against circuses which come into our area and try to prevent culls in the surrounding area.
