World Day For Farm Animals 2010

Posted 01/09/2010

Each year, approximately 58 billion animals are killed in the world's factory farms and slaughterhouses to produce meat, eggs, and dairy. World Farm Animals Day is dedicated to exposing, mourning, and memorializing the needless suffering and death of cows, pigs, turkeys, chickens, and other innocent, sentient animals raised and slaughtered for food.

There will be a march in London on Saturday October 2nd. Transport is available from Liverpool, please email kj001f8644@blueyonder.co.uk for more details. For those making arrangements, participants will meet 12 noon at Cavendish Square, W1G OPR (nearest Tube: Oxford Circus), to march through the centre of London, taking the message to large numbers of shoppers, tourists and residents.

Vivisection Week of Action

Demo @ John Moores University Monday 12th April & University of Liverpool Monday 19th April

For both demos meet at 11.00am at Next to Nowhere 96 Bold Street, Liverpool. If you require further information contact enquiries@merseysideanimalrights.co.uk

In the UK, 30% of vivisection is conducted inside top-secret establishments at universities and colleges, often hidden on the top floors or in the basements of biology and psychology departments. In most cases, those attending such establishments and locals are not even aware of the painful experiments and animal torment happening on their campuses and doorsteps. As the price of obtaining primates has soared due to activist pressure and the closing down of facilities, an increase of the breeding and use of genetically modified animals has occured. Most university establishments now have their own breeding colonies of rabbits, guinea-pigs and rodents as a direct result of the closure of over 30 commercial animal suppliers.

The current price of a primate in the UK is averaged at £1,000 per animal, leading to the Medical Research Council (MRC) opening a ‘top secret' breeding and importation centre at the University of Leicester and military research lab DSTL Porton Down, which specifically supply the needs of academic establishments, in a desperate attempt to keep primate research ongoing. Fortunately, the price costs and public opinion have lead to the failure of this plan.

This week, the Animal Liberation Investigation Unit (ALIU) released a list of every university animal lab in the country. As a direct response, we call upon animal rights groups across the country to organise and help bring to light this hidden animal torture in academic facilities so we have called a national week of action: 12th – 18th APRIL 2010 to coincide with World Month for Laboratory Animals. Go out there and take action for the animals. From demo's to die-ins, filming inside these laboratories, leafleting on campuses and publicity stunts – make sure you're part of it!

World Lab Day 24th April 2010

Posted 28th March 2010

This year, as ever, there will be a national march and rally to commemorate and highlight the immense suffering endured by lab animals all over the world – suffering which is not only unethical, but is also unnecessary and unscientific.

The day is recognised by the United Nations and is now marked by anti-vivisectionists on every continent. It is often marked by a full week of activity known as Lab Animal week or World Week for Laboratory Animals.

The rally will take place on Lab Animal Day, the 24th April , from 11.30am at Cavendish Square, London W1G (nearest tube: Oxford Circus)

A coach from Liverpool will be leaving 7am.  For more info/book a place etc, please email Kate kj001f8644@blueyonder.co.uk or phone 07505 125973

Sea Shepherd Film Night Fundraiser

Posted 28th March 2010

On Thursday 8th April Merseyside Animal Rights are showing the film Sharkwater which exposes how sharks are being driven to the brink of extinction. Paul Watson and Sea Shepherd confront the corrupt and illegal hunting industry in Guatemala , Ecuador and Costa Rica , complete with police chases, boat ramming and corrupt court systems.

We are pleased to welcome Dan from the Sea Shepherd who will talk about his experiences on board and the vital work the society does to protect marine wildlife.

Established in 1977, Sea Shepherd Conservation Society (SSCS) is an international non-profit, marine wildlife conservation organization. Their mission is to end the destruction of habitat and slaughter of wildlife in the world's oceans in order to conserve and protect ecosystems and species.

Sea Shepherd uses innovative direct-action tactics to investigate, document, and take action when necessary to expose and confront illegal activities on the high seas.

Vegan fish and chips will be served from 7pm and the film will begin at 8pm. Venue is Next to Nowhere, 96 Bold Street, Liverpool. Entry is free.

Sat 3rd April Easter Bunny demo at Highgate rabbit breeders

Posted 06/03/10

Every year in the UK almost 30, 000 rabbits suffer and die in vivisection laboratories. More than 65% of these experiments involve NO anaesthetic. Rabbits are particularly used in the notorious Draize eye test (to record corrosive damage to the eye over several days, usually with no pain relief), and the skin irritancy test (where rabbits are partially shaved and have substances such as insecticides and drain cleaner applied and the effects observed over 1-2 weeks, usually with no pain relief).

Following the rescue of 129 rabbits from Highgate Farm, Lincs in 2008, the farm subsequently stopped supplying rabbits for animal testing. However, after instruction from the police and pressure from the industry the farm reluctantly resumed supplying rabbits to laboratories, one of which is Europe's biggest and most exposed lab, Huntingdon Life Sciences (HLS).

Demos most weeks outside farm, our group goes every other week at the moment.  If anyone is interested on going on these pickets email kj001f8644@blueyonder.co.uk and I will pass onto the person sorting transport. National demo there Sat 3rd April, Easter bunny theme, let me know if you want to go.

The Grand National: National Disgrace

Posted 06/03/10

The Grand National is staged at Aintree during the first week of April. The big race is the climax of a three-day meeting that as cost the lives of 30 horses between 1999 and 2009. Many people, who wouldn’t normally bet on horseracing, have a ‘harmless flutter’ on the Grand National. But there is nothing harmless about a race that routinely inflicts serious injury and death upon the horses who take part.

The Grand National is a deliberately punishing and hazardous event: longer than any other (four and a half miles) and presenting 30 uniquely high and awkward obstacles. It features perilous drops, ditches and sharp turns. Many of the horses
will have encountered nothing like it before. Forty usually take part. This is an excessively crowded field, which adds to the risk of collisions and falls. Only one third are likely to finish.

Merseyside Animal Rights we be raising awareness of racegoers to the cruelty which lies at the heart of the horse racing industry on the day of the Grand National Sat 10th April. We will meet up outside Aintree Station at 11.00am.

NATIONAL MARCH & RALLY AGAINST BRADFORD UNIVERSITY

Posted 07/02/2010

Saturday 13th February 2010
Meeting 12noon at Centenary Square, Queensbury, Bradford, BD1 9ST

On Saturday 13th February 2010, campaigners from across the country will be decending on Bradford so as to call for the university to end all animal experiments.

A rally, stalls and speeches are being held in Centenary Square (next to the Town Hall) before marching through Bradford town centre and up to the university laboratories.

The University of Bradford have been exposed for horrific animal abuse inside their laboratories, such as purposely starving animals to make them perform procedures, conducting drug addiction experiments on nursing animals and cutting them open with scalpels to see the effects of scarring. All experiments happening could be replaced with non-animal methods.

Please join us on this important day and speak up for the closure of Bradford's animal torture laboratory.

Veggies Catering will be providing vegan food, drinks and refreshments on the day.

SPEAKERS:

Sean Kirtley -
